I feel community engagement is at the core of many TTR presentations. One such presentation was Culture Shock Miami. An audience development program, Culture Shock Miami was designed to introduce our youth to live arts and cultural experiences. Their presentation illustrated how the arts have a long history of bringing people together across boundaries -- increasing understandings across disparate and historically unequal groups, and supporting the agency of underrepresented communities to create, maintain and share their own stories. Integrating the arts more fully into our lives enriches each of us and brings us together establishing stronger communities. Culture Shock Miami provided me with a better understanding of how essential the arts and culture are for building communities, supporting development, nurturing health and well-being, and contributing to economic opportunity and local equity. Museums or concert halls are not the only place to find art and artists -- they are all around us. Every one of us has the ability to create and to imagine a way to make our neighborhood healthier or stronger. Culture Shock Miami is a leading illustration of the change we can bring about to our communities when we come together!
